No More Shilly Shallying! It's time to join the TAB team.
by Fiona Fernie, Editor of The Amateur Beekeeper
Every month, The Amateur Beekeeper lands in the inbox of thousands of recreational beekeepers across Australia. What many readers may not realise is that it is produced by a team of just two: Fiona Fernie, Editor, working from Beaudesert in Queensland, and her junior assistant, Ian Spencer, in East Kurrajong, New South Wales.
Twelve months ago, working together as a collaborative team, we fundamentally changed TAB. We rethought our approach to the editorial, and we moved the publication from a traditional magazine format to a web magazine, or webzine.
The readership statistics tell us it has been a huge success. That’s particularly true for the half of our readers who now read TAB on a mobile phone.
More than a monthly magazine
TAB is now more than a monthly read. It is a searchable web resource that builds with every issue, a bit like a bee Wikipedia made just for Australian recreational beekeepers. How good is that!
Whether you are chasing advice on swarm control, hive health or seasonal management, past articles are only a search away.
Future-proofing TAB
To keep TAB going strong for years to come, we need more people on the team.
First and foremost, we are looking for people with a passionate interest in bees. If you are also interested in communication and are happy to put your ideas on the table, we would love to hear from you.
You don’t need to be an experienced writer, editor or web designer. We are happy to help you develop skills on both the editorial and web sides of the publication. You will need a computer, but we can supply the software and provide training as required.
A project worth getting your teeth into
If you enjoy beekeeping and are looking for a project with real value, joining the TAB team may be just the thing. Producing TAB is rewarding in its own right, and helping deliver good communication to thousands of beekeepers is worthwhile work.
