Colonel Guy Pulling

The father of this organisation was Colonel Guy Harris Pulling who lived at Turramurra, Sydney, where he began personal beekeeping in 1948 and founded the amateur association in 1954. Details of the life and achievements of this remarkable man were gleaned from several sources and are here integrated into a connected narrative. Sources include an article published in the April/May 2004 issue of The Amateur Beekeeper, the journal of the Amateur Beekeepers' Association of NSW, the obituary written by Murray Charlton in The Australasian Beekeeper September 1971 and an article in the magazine Home Beautiful in August 1958. Details of his military service were supplied as personal communication by my nephew Colonel Rex Wright (retired). Guy Harris Pulling was born in Goulburn on 12thSeptember, 1895, the youngest of three boys. The family settled at Bishopgate in Union Street North Sydney. The boys were educated at Sydney Church of England Grammar School where Guy distinguished himself as an oarsman. His older brothers, Charles and Hugh, went on to Sydney University and Guy became a surveyor working in Queensland. All three brothers enlisted in the army early in World War I. Guy went overseas to Gallipoli as a sergeant and was there promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. Charles and Hugh also served as lieutenants in that campaign and Charles was killed. Guy was invalided from Gallipoli with "enteric" but went on to France where he was wounded at Pozieres and Grease Trench.

After the war he went to India and by 1939 was a major in the 6th Gurkha Rifles, rising to commanding officer by 1942. He served in Afghanistan, Waziristan (now part of Pakistan) and on the North West Frontier where he assumed the responsibilities of brigadier. Neville Cutts, former apiary officer of the Department of Agriculture, (and as an octogenarian still breeding queens), enjoys vivid memories of the early years of the ABA.

He remembers Col Pulling and remarked that while in India he hunted tigers with Sir William Slim, Governor General of Australia 1953-1960. On his retirement in 1949 Colonel and Mrs Pulling returned to Australia and made their home at Turramurra where he became interested in beekeeping and attended the Apiary Summer School at the Hawkesbury Agricultural College. In 1958 he wrote a detailed and well illustrated article on "Backyard Beekeeping" published in the magazine Home Beautiful (Appendix 1). Though the print of the scanned pages is barely legible the pictures tell the story clearly. Col Pulling's final years were spent at Orange where he died on August 18`h 1971 at the age of 75 years.
