This year the 2 members of the Honey Bee community in Australia have received prestigious Churchill Fellowships. 

A Churchill Fellowship provides funding for the Fellow to travel and conduct research for their nominated projects.

Project: Australia produces the world's most distinctive honeys, yet we have no structured national pathway for training honey sensory experts or competition judges. Standards vary across shows, capability is uneven, and there is no clear pathway for new talent. This gap is increasingly significant. I will investigate how leading organisations train, accredit and sustain experts, and use those insights to develop a practical, scalable national framework for Australia.

Project: Northern Australia has begun transitioning to management for varroa mite (varroa). This represents a new era for commercial and recreational beekeepers and pollination-reliant industries. The transition to management emphasises the crucial need to boost competency of varroa management within the beekeeping community and industry sectors to bolster resilience. These industries face a critical knowledge gap on how this devastating pest will interact within the northern Australian environment and with other endemic pests.
